Skibet St. Cecilia Maria med skipper Schmerkell var på vej fra Setúbal/St. Ubes i Portugal til København lastet med appelsiner, citroner, vin og salt, da det 2. april 1770 forliste nær havnen i Seaford i East Sussex.

En del af ladningen ville blive bjærget.

Skipperen kan være identisk med (Hans) Johann Nicolai Smerckel fra Åbenrå, som 1762 tog borgerskab i København.
