Skibet St. Cecilia Maria med skipper Schmerkell var på vej fra Setúbal/St. Ubes i Portugal til København lastet med appelsiner, citroner, vin og salt, da det 2. april 1770 forliste nær havnen i Seaford i East Sussex.
En del af ladningen ville blive bjærget.
Skipperen kan være identisk med Hans Smerckel som 1766 betalte øresundstold på vej fra Lissabon til hjemstedet København og som muligvis var identisk med Johann Nicolai Smerckel, der 1760 var fra Åbenrå, men kan også være identisk med Peter Schmerkel fra Lissabon nævnt 1776.
